A Classic Contemporary Bedroom Upgrade

This post is part of our “Your Space by Style & Grace” series, which showcases my solutions to your design problems.

When my mom and I were chatting the other day, she told me she wanted to refresh her bedroom (The before is the picture above on the left). I said, “Can I help? Aaaaaaand can I feature it on the blog?” Hahaha. My mom is always a good sport, and she was excited to work on this makeover together. She has a really classic style, but wanted to make it feel more modern without losing that classic touch. We decided to mix some of the things she already had with some new, contemporary pieces to achieve that classic contemporary look.

We decided to start by swapping the wood-framed, tufted headboard for something with clean lines and minimal detail. To help it stand out more, my mom asked my dad to install a faux board and batten wall treatment. Pro tip: Paint the drywall before installing the trim pieces to make it easier to paint around all the new corners/angles you are creating! I love the extra detail the double trim added!

So much of achieving the look you want comes down to styling. With classic contemporary in mind, we decided to keep the paisley duvet cover and pillows as anchor pieces and try mixing in other options to change up the feeling. We worked through styling with a cream colored quilt, a woven throw, and several different accent pillows. We also swapped the bench at the end of the bed with these upholstered ottomans from Studio McGee at Target.

To complete the classic contemporary look, we repurposed the bench that was at the foot of the bed next to the wardrobe int he room. We also swapped out the nightstand lamps for something taller with cleaner lines.

Check out some of my favorite classic contemporary pieces by shopping this post below and be sure to come back next month for the March installment of Your Space by Style & Grace!
